  Attabad Lake: From Tragedy to Turquoise Beauty Attabad Lake (also called Hunza Lake ) is a stunning high-mountain lake in the Gojal region of Hunza Valley , located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan . What makes it especially remarkable is that it didn’t exist before 2010   it was born out of a dramatic natural disaster.  Formation: A Mountain Collapses On January 4, 2010 , a massive landslide occurred near Attabad village in the Hunza Valley. Tons of earth and rock thundered down the slope, completely blocking the Hunza River . The landslide killed about 20 people , buried parts of Attabad village, and caused immediate devastation in the valley.  With the river blocked, water began to back up behind this natural dam.
