Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), located in the northernmost part of the Pakistani-administered territory, is one of the most geographically spectacular and culturally diverse regions in South Asia. Known for its soaring mountains, deep valleys, ancient trade routes, and rich heritage, Gilgit-Baltistan attracts trekkers, historians, and travelers from around the world.

Key geographical highlights:

  • Capital: Gilgit

  • Major cities: Skardu, Hunza, Ghizer, Kharmang, Shigar

  • Major rivers: Gilgit River, Shyok River, Indus River

  • Climate: Ranges from arid to alpine, with long winters and mild summers

History and Cultural Heritage

Gilgit-Baltistan has been an ancient crossroads of civilizations. It once lay along the Silk Route, connecting Central Asia, South Asia, and China. Its valleys have been inhabited for thousands of years and display influences from Tibetan, Central Asian, and Indo-Aryan cultures.
