Khaplu Fort: The Jewel of Baltistan

Khaplu Fort, also known as Yabgo Khar, is one of the most beautiful and historically important forts in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Historical Background

Khaplu Fort was built in the 19th century by Raja Daulat Ali Khan of the Yabgo dynasty, which ruled the region for centuries. The fort served as the royal palace and administrative center of Khaplu. Because of its importance, the fort became a symbol of power, governance, and tradition in Baltistan.

Architectural Features

The architecture of Khaplu Fort is a unique blend of Balti, Tibetan, Central Asian, and Kashmiri styles. It was constructed using stone, wood, and mud, materials well-suited for the cold mountainous climate. Over time, Khaplu Fort fell into a state of decay. In the early 2000s, it was restored by the Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan using traditional techniques and local labor. The successful restoration preserved the fort’s original beauty and historical value. Today, the fort stands as an excellent example of heritage conservation in Pakistan.

Today, Khaplu Fort functions as a heritage hotel and museum. Visitors can explore the museum to learn about Balti culture, traditions, and history. The fort also attracts tourists from around the world, helping promote tourism and providing economic benefits to the local community.

Its elegant architecture, royal history, and successful restoration make it one of the most important heritage sites in Gilgit-Baltistan.
