Shangrila Lake, also known as Lower Kachura Lake, is one of the most beautiful and famous tourist destinations in Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan. Shangrila Lake is located in the Kachura Valley, about 20 to 25 kilometers from Skardu city. The lake lies at an elevation of approximately 2,500 meters above sea level. It is easily accessible by road, and visitors can reach the lake within a short drive from Skardu Airport. The journey offers breathtaking views of rocky landscapes, streams, and mountain ranges.

Origin of the Name Shangrila

Originally known as Lower Kachura Lake, the site became famous after the establishment of Shangrila Resort in 1983. The name “Shangrila” is inspired by the novel Lost Horizon by James Hilton, in which Shangri-La represents a hidden, peaceful valley. The resort was founded by Brigadier  Muhammad Aslam Khan, who envisioned promoting tourism in the northern areas of Pakistan.

The lake is surrounded by snow covered peaks, green hills, and colorful flower gardens. Its clear blue water reflects the surrounding mountains, creating a mesmerizing view. Shangrila Resort and Its Attractions
