Attabad Lake: From Tragedy to Turquoise Beauty

Attabad Lake (also called Hunza Lake) is a stunning high-mountain lake in the Gojal region of Hunza Valley, located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. What makes it especially remarkable is that it didn’t exist before 2010  it was born out of a dramatic natural disaster. 

Formation: A Mountain Collapses

On January 4, 2010, a massive landslide occurred near Attabad village in the Hunza Valley. Tons of earth and rock thundered down the slope, completely blocking the Hunza River. The landslide killed about 20 people, buried parts of Attabad village, and caused immediate devastation in the valley. 

With the river blocked, water began to back up behind this natural dam. Over the next few months, the lake grew steadily, eventually reaching about 21 km (13 miles) in length and more than 100 m (330 ft) deep. 

Impact on People and Infrastructure

The rising waters had far-reaching effects on the local population and infrastructure:

  • Thousands Displaced: Around 6,000 people had to leave their homes due to flooding and damage to farmland and villages. 

  • Road Blocked: The lake submerged over 19 km of the Karakoram Highway, the vital road linking northern Pakistan with the rest of the country and with China. Transport was disrupted  vehicles couldn’t pass, and people had to use boats to cross the water.

  • Economic Loss: Businesses, homes, fields, and orchards were destroyed. Trade and travel along the Silk Road-linked Karakoram Highway were severely affected. 

Engineering and Recovery

To manage the rising water and maintain connectivity:

  • Spillway Creation: Local authorities and engineers excavated a spillway to help the lake drain over the landslide dam, controlling water levels and protecting villages downstream.

  • Highway Restoration: A major construction project realigned the Karakoram Highway around the lake with new road sections and tunnels, reopening the route and restoring trade and travel. 

A Beautiful Attraction[

What began as a disaster has since become a major scenic attraction. Attabad Lake’s turquoise-blue waters, set against the rugged peaks of the Karakoram Range, draw tourists from around Pakistan and beyond. 

Activities around the lake include:

  • Boating and Jet-skiing

  • Fishing

  • Sightseeing and Photography
    The lake’s beauty contrasts sharply with its dramatic origin, offering both stunning views and a powerful reminder of nature’s force.

Symbol of Resilience

Although the formation of Attabad Lake brought hardship to local communities, it also triggered economic opportunities through tourism and revitalized interest in the Hunza region as a destination for travelers seeking breathtaking landscapes.
